Chondroitin Sulfate in Nervecept: How 50 mg Compares With the Trials
Chondroitin sulfate in Nervecept is a cartilage compound listed at 50 mg per capsule, line three of eight and 7.2% of the 699 mg of actives. Knee arthritis trials used 800 to 1,200 mg a day, so one capsule gives about one sixteenth of the lower dose. Its research covers joint pain only, not nerves.

The basics01
What is chondroitin sulfate?
Chondroitin sulfate is a long sugar chain found in cartilage, the rubbery tissue that cushions the ends of bones. It helps cartilage hold water, which keeps the tissue springy under load.
Supplement chondroitin is usually taken from animal cartilage, such as cow, pig, chicken or shark. The Nervecept label does not name the animal source for its chondroitin.
For decades it has been sold beside glucosamine as a two-part joint supplement. Nervecept follows that pattern, though with far less chondroitin than most joint products.
On the label02
How much chondroitin sulfate is in a Nervecept capsule?
A Nervecept capsule lists 50 mg of chondroitin sulfate. That is line three on the Supplement Facts panel and 7.2% of the 699 mg of actives.
It ties with turmeric for third place by weight. Glucosamine, at 500 mg, outweighs it ten to one. Across a 30-capsule bottle, chondroitin adds up to 1,500 mg, which is less than two days at the dose used in the CONCEPT trial.
Every word printed on the bottle is on the supplement facts page.

Research03
Does chondroitin sulfate help knee pain?
Chondroitin may give a small, short-term drop in knee arthritis pain, but the evidence is mostly low quality. A Cochrane review of 43 trials found pain fell by about 10 points on a 100-point scale in studies under six months (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA (2015)).
Results differ by trial. In CONCEPT, 604 people took 800 mg a day for six months, and pain dropped more than with placebo; a chondroitin maker paid for the study (Reginster et al., CONCEPT trial 2017). In the larger, NIH-funded GAIT trial, 1,200 mg a day was not significantly better than placebo (Clegg et al., NEJM 2006 (GAIT)).
Guidelines for hip and knee arthritis recommend against chondroitin and against glucosamine-chondroitin combinations (NCCIH, Chronic Pain and Complementary).
| Study | Daily dose | Nervecept's share | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| CONCEPT (Reginster et al., CONCEPT trial 2017) | 800 mg, 6 months | About 1/16 | Beat placebo; maker-sponsored |
| GAIT (Clegg et al., NEJM 2006 (GAIT)) | 1,200 mg, 24 weeks | 1/24 | Not significantly better than placebo |
| Cochrane review (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA (2015)) | Various | Not comparable | About 10 points less pain short term; low-quality evidence |
Dose check04
Is 50 mg of chondroitin enough to matter?
It is far below every studied dose. At 50 mg, one capsule supplies about 6% of the 800 mg used in CONCEPT and about 4% of the 1,200 mg used in GAIT (Reginster et al., CONCEPT trial 2017) (Clegg et al., NEJM 2006 (GAIT)).
The math is simple: 800 divided by 50 is 16, so you would need 16 capsules to match CONCEPT. The label allows one a day, and it would also mean 8,000 mg of glucosamine, which nobody should take.
Keep both sides in view. A tiny dose does not prove zero effect. A full dose would still say nothing about nerves, since every trial measured joint pain.
Nerve evidence05
Is there any nerve evidence for chondroitin supplements?
No human trial we found tested chondroitin supplements for neuropathy, nerve pain or numbness. Cochrane's review and the two big trials looked only at arthritis in the knee and hip (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA (2015)).
That matters for anyone buying Nervecept for burning or tingling feet. Those symptoms often come from diabetes, and the steps with real evidence are blood sugar control, daily foot checks and a yearly foot exam (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).

Does chondroitin interact with warfarin?
It may. NCCIH links glucosamine and chondroitin to a higher bleeding risk in people on warfarin, and MSKCC says the pair may raise INR (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (MSKCC, Glucosamine).
Because Nervecept holds both, the warning applies to the capsule as a whole, not just one line. Anyone on warfarin should tell the prescriber before starting and ask whether an extra INR check makes sense. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed.
Apart from that, chondroitin has a mild safety record in trials. Cochrane found serious side effects were less common than with placebo (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA (2015)).
In its favor
- Mild side effects in trials
- Exact amount printed on the label
- Small short-term joint benefit in some studies
Against it
- 50 mg is a tiny share of trial doses
- May raise INR with glucosamine on warfarin
- Animal source not named; no nerve data
Who should skip it07
Who should avoid chondroitin sulfate?
People on warfarin should not start chondroitin without their doctor. Those who avoid animal products for religious or dietary reasons may also want to skip it, since the source is not printed.
The capsule adds one more rule: it contains shellfish from its glucosamine, so anyone with a shellfish allergy should skip Nervecept entirely. The label also asks pregnant or nursing women, people under 18 and anyone with a medical condition to check with a physician.
In the formula08
What does chondroitin add to the Nervecept formula?
In Nervecept, chondroitin works as a small partner to glucosamine, the familiar joint pairing. At 50 mg, it reads more like a nod to that pairing than a trial-strength dose.
Read about its partner on the glucosamine sulfate page, or see how the whole label stacks up against other nerve formulas on the comparison page.
FAQ09
Nervecept questions people ask
Where does the chondroitin in Nervecept come from?
The label does not say. Supplement chondroitin is usually taken from animal cartilage, such as cow, pig, chicken or shark. Ask the order desk at +1 (302) 200-3480 if the source matters to you.
How many Nervecept capsules equal 800 mg of chondroitin?
Sixteen, which is why the comparison only shows the gap. The label allows one capsule a day. Never take extra capsules to chase a studied dose; that would multiply the glucosamine too.
Is chondroitin better than glucosamine for knees?
Neither is clearly helpful. In GAIT, chondroitin and glucosamine each failed to beat placebo overall. Cochrane found a small short-term chondroitin benefit, mostly from low-quality trials, and guidelines recommend against both.
Does chondroitin sulfate rebuild cartilage?
That has not been shown in people. Studies mostly measured pain and function, with small effects. A two-year NIH trial of glucosamine and chondroitin found no difference in joint space width versus placebo.
Is chondroitin safe to take long term?
Trials lasting months found mild side effects, and Cochrane saw fewer serious events than with placebo. The main caution is warfarin, since chondroitin with glucosamine may raise INR and bleeding risk.
Does chondroitin help nerve damage in the feet?
No study we found shows that. Chondroitin research covers knee and hip arthritis. Burning or numb feet need a doctor's check, with blood sugar control and daily foot care as the proven steps.
