Vitamin B6 Toxicity: When a Nerve Vitamin Harms Nerves

Quick answer

Vitamin B6 toxicity is nerve damage caused by taking too much B6 over time. The adult upper limit is 100 mg a day, set to prevent sensory neuropathy. Symptoms such as tingling and numbness usually ease after the vitamin is stopped. Check the B6 in every product you take.

What is vitamin B6 toxicity?

Vitamin B6 toxicity is sensory neuropathy caused by long-term high intake of B6 from supplements. NINDS lists excess B6 among the causes of peripheral neuropathy (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).

B6 is a needed vitamin. The problem is the amount. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the adult upper limit at 100 mg a day to prevent this nerve damage (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).

Vitamin B6 amounts, per NIH ODS
MeasureAmount
Adult RDA1.3 to 1.7 mg a day
Upper limit100 mg a day
Severe neuropathy in long-term reports1 to 6 g a day
Some reports of neuropathyBelow 500 mg a day

One gram is 1,000 mg. So the severe cases involved at least ten times the upper limit.

What has Australia's TGA said about vitamin B6?

Australia's drug regulator, the TGA, counted 250 reports of peripheral neuropathy or related terms linked to B6 products as of October 31, 2025 (TGA, Vitamin B6 safety update).

It then tightened the rules. Oral products over 50 mg and up to 200 mg a day become Pharmacist Only from June 1, 2027. Products over 200 mg stay prescription-only.

A rule from March 2022 makes products over 10 mg a day warn users to stop if tingling, burning or numbness occurs. That is a useful rule for anyone, anywhere. If a product makes your feet tingle, stop it and call your clinician.

How do you check all your products for vitamin B6?

Add up the B6 from every product that has a Supplement Facts panel. The risk comes from the total, not from one bottle.

  1. Gather every bottle

Include multivitamins, B-complex products and anything sold for nerves or energy.

  2. Find the B6 line

It may be listed as pyridoxine. Note the milligrams per serving.

  3. Add the servings you take

Compare the daily total with 100 mg.

  4. Ask a pharmacist

Bring the bottles if the total is close to or above the limit.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Only supplements are in question here.

Does Nervecept contain vitamin B6?

No. The Nervecept label lists eight ingredients with exact amounts, and vitamin B6 is not one of them.

That means Nervecept adds nothing to your B6 total. It also means it is not a B vitamin product, despite the nerve wording on the front. It contains shellfish (crayfish), and it does not treat neuropathy.

All eight lines, with amounts, sit on the ingredients page. For the wider picture, read the nerve vitamins guide.
