Quercetin for Nerve Health: What 8 mg Can and Cannot Tell You

Quick answer

Quercetin for nerve health lacks human proof. Memorial Sloan Kettering says most quercetin evidence comes from lab and animal studies and lists no nerve use. Nervecept has 8 mg per capsule, while the trials with effects used 500 mg a day or more. The nerve effect is unknown.

What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a plant compound found in many fruits, vegetables and herbs. Nervecept takes it from the bud of Sophora japonica.

MSK states quercetin has not been shown to treat cancer or other diseases. Human results are limited and mixed, and nerve uses are not listed (MSKCC, Quercetin).

The label amount is exact: 8 mg per capsule. It does not give a food-equivalent or a purity figure, so we cannot compare it with a serving of onions or apples.

That leaves the nerve idea resting on cell and animal work. Such work shows what might happen, not what does.

How does 8 mg compare with studied quercetin doses?

It is tiny. A review of 7 trials with 587 people found a small blood pressure drop, and it was significant only at 500 mg a day or more (Serban et al., quercetin meta-analysis). Eight milligrams is under 2% of that.

Those trials looked at blood pressure, not nerves. So even a matching dose would not prove a nerve benefit. A small dose also does not prove nothing happens.

Where does quercetin sit in the Nervecept capsule?

Quercetin is one of four 8 mg lines. Together with 500 mg of glucosamine and three larger lines, the capsule lists 699 mg of actives. Quercetin is about 1.1% of that.

  1. 1Glucosamine Sulfate500 mg · 71.5% of the actives · Joint compounds
  2. 2Indian Frankincense (Boswellia serrata)(herb)67 mg · 9.6% of the actives · Plant extracts
  3. 3Chondroitin Sulfate50 mg · 7.2% of the actives · Joint compounds
  4. 4Turmeric (Curcuma longa)(root)50 mg · 7.2% of the actives · Plant extracts
  5. 5Quercetin (Sophora japonica)(bud)8 mg · 1.1% of the actives · Plant extracts
  6. 6Methionine8 mg · 1.1% of the actives · Amino acid
  7. 7Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)8 mg · 1.1% of the actives · Sulfur compound
  8. 8Bromelain (Ananas comosus)(stem)8 mg · 1.1% of the actives · Plant extracts

From the Supplement Facts panel on the label: every line has an exact amount, and no line has a Daily Value. The capsule shell (hypromellose) and rice flour are not counted. The glucosamine is made from shellfish (crayfish).

The full list is on the ingredients page.

Does quercetin interact with medicines?

It can. MSK says quercetin may affect drugs processed by the CYP3A4 or CYP2C19 enzymes. One case report describes a rise in INR in a man on warfarin that returned to normal after he stopped quercetin (MSKCC, Quercetin).

It also reminds us to look at the whole capsule. Nervecept holds five lines with blood-thinner flags in the sources we read: glucosamine, chondroitin, turmeric, bromelain and quercetin. Each one adds to the question you bring to your clinic.

That is a single report, so the true risk is unknown. Still, ask your pharmacist if you take regular medicine.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop a medicine because of a supplement. Nervecept also contains shellfish (crayfish).

FAQ01

Nervecept questions people ask

Is quercetin an antioxidant?

It is often sold as one. Our sources do not test that claim for nerves. MSK finds human evidence limited and mixed (MSKCC, Quercetin).

Can quercetin repair nerve damage?

No source we use says so. The lab work does not show a benefit in people, and 8 mg is far below studied doses.

Is the quercetin in Nervecept from food?

The label says it comes from the bud of Sophora japonica. Eight milligrams is a supplement amount, and the label does not compare it with food.
