Peripheral Neuropathy Supplements: Which Ones Have Evidence?

Quick answer

Peripheral neuropathy supplements are products people take for nerve symptoms in the feet, legs, hands or arms. The evidence is thin. Fixing a B12 shortage is clear, and intravenous alpha-lipoic acid has support. For most others it is weak or unclear. Nervecept contains shellfish and none of these.

What is peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy means damage to nerves that lie outside the brain and spinal cord. There are more than 100 types, and diabetes is the leading cause (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).

Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness, pain or weakness in the feet, legs, hands or arms. They are often worse at night (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). Between one third and one half of people with diabetes have it (NIDDK, Diabetic Neuropathy).

Other causes include low vitamin B12, too much vitamin B6, alcohol, kidney disease, infections and chemotherapy (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). Treatment targets the cause.

Which peripheral neuropathy supplements have evidence?

Few do. The best case is vitamin B12 when you are low. Intravenous alpha-lipoic acid has support. The rest range from very low certainty to unproven.

None of the guidelines we cite recommends a supplement for nerve pain (ADA, Diabetic Neuropathy Position 2017) (AAN, Painful Diabetic Neuropathy 2022).

What our sources say about common nerve supplements
SupplementWhat the evidence says
Vitamin B12Deficiency causes numbness and tingling. Metformin and acid reducers can lower it (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12)
Vitamin B6Too much causes neuropathy. Upper limit 100 mg a day (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6)
Alpha-lipoic acidIV helped in meta-analyses; oral is weaker (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid)
Acetyl-L-carnitineVery low certainty; avoid in chemotherapy nerve problems (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine 2019) (ASCO Post, CIPN guideline 2020)
PEASmall, mixed trials; very high heterogeneity (Lang-Illievich et al., PEA 2023)
TurmericNerve data only in rats and mice (Silveira et al., turmeric animal review)

Can the wrong supplement make neuropathy worse?

Yes, in some cases. Vitamin B6 is the clearest. Long-term high doses caused severe sensory neuropathy, and symptoms usually fade after stopping (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6).

ASCO also says acetyl-L-carnitine should be avoided in chemotherapy nerve problems, because data suggest it may be harmful (ASCO Post, CIPN guideline 2020). Taking more of a nerve vitamin does not always help.

Tell your doctor before you add anything. Some supplements interact with medicines and affect surgery (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).

Where does Nervecept fit among them?

It fits in none of those rows. Nervecept has no B12, B6, alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine or PEA. Its eight lines are mostly joint-style ingredients.

Glucosamine sulfate is 500 mg, boswellia 67 mg, chondroitin 50 mg, turmeric 50 mg, and quercetin, methionine, MSM and bromelain 8 mg each. Most doses are well below studied amounts, and the studies were mainly about joints.

It contains shellfish (crayfish). Bottle prices are $79, $69 or $49 by pack, and a 60-day guarantee is listed on the sales page (Nervecept sales page). See the ingredients page.

What should you do first?

See a doctor, ask about the cause, and ask about a B12 blood test if you take metformin. Then decide on supplements together. Some signs need care now:

  1. Sudden one-sided numbnessArm, leg or face, on one side of the body
  2. Face drooping, slurred speechOr trouble understanding speech
  3. Bladder or bowel changesLost control with back pain or numb inner thighs
  4. Weakness that spreadsGetting much worse over hours or days
  5. A foot sore that will not healOr a red, hot, swollen foot

SoonTingling, burning or numbness in the feet or hands that lasts more than a few weeks, keeps you up at night, or comes with diabetes, heavy drinking or chemotherapy: book a doctor visit and ask about B12 and blood sugar tests.

Call 911For sudden numbness or weakness on one side, a drooping face, trouble speaking, or sudden loss of bladder or bowel control.

Causes and warning signs from NINDS (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy) and MedlinePlus (MedlinePlus, Sciatica); foot sores from CDC (CDC, Your Feet and Diabetes).

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement. Nerve pain medicines ease pain but do not reverse nerve damage (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).

FAQ01

Nervecept questions people ask

What is the best supplement for peripheral neuropathy?

No supplement is best for everyone. If you are low in vitamin B12, fixing that is clear. For others, evidence is weak or unclear, so ask your doctor.

Does vitamin B12 help neuropathy?

It helps when a shortage is the cause. B12 deficiency can cause numbness and tingling, and metformin can lower B12. A blood test shows whether you are low.

Are peripheral neuropathy supplements covered by guidelines?

Not in the ones we cite. The AAN and ADA list prescription medicines, and the AAN adds exercise, CBT and tai chi.

Can neuropathy supplements interact with my medicines?

Yes. Some raise bleeding risk or change how drugs work. Show your pharmacist the full list.
