PEA Nerve Pain Supplement: Does Palmitoylethanolamide Help?
A PEA nerve pain supplement contains palmitoylethanolamide, an ingredient tested for chronic pain. Pooled trials found lower pain scores, but the trials were small and disagreed with each other. The authors say the change may not matter much in daily life. Nervecept does not contain PEA.

What is a PEA nerve pain supplement?
It is a supplement whose active ingredient is PEA, short for palmitoylethanolamide. It is sold for chronic pain, and nerve pain is one use people ask about.
It is a dietary supplement, so FDA does not approve it for safety or effectiveness before sale (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). Products vary by brand, and a label may not match what is inside (NCCIH, Using Supplements Wisely).
PEA is not a nerve vitamin. It is a separate ingredient with its own small body of research.
What does the research on PEA show?
Pooled trials show lower chronic pain scores on PEA than on control. The result is real on paper, but it is not strong.
A 2023 meta-analysis pooled 11 double-blind trials with 774 patients. Doses ran from 300 to 1,200 mg a day. PEA lowered pain scores and was generally well tolerated (Lang-Illievich et al., PEA 2023).
The weak points matter just as much. Heterogeneity was very high, which means the trials disagreed. Nearly all had under 100 patients, and some were company-funded. The authors caution the change may not be clinically meaningful (Lang-Illievich et al., PEA 2023).
| Item | Finding |
|---|---|
| Trials and people | 11 trials, 774 patients |
| Daily doses | 300 to 1,200 mg |
| Pain result | Lower than control |
| Consistency | Very high heterogeneity |
| Funding | Some company-funded |
Is PEA proven for nerve pain?
No. The pooled trials covered chronic pain in general. They do not prove that PEA treats a specific nerve condition or helps you.
Guidelines for painful diabetic neuropathy list prescription medicines and, for some people, exercise or tai chi. PEA is not on those lists (AAN, Painful Diabetic Neuropathy 2022). NINDS also does not recommend supplements as treatment (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
We found no safety data in our sources beyond "generally well tolerated" in those trials. Ask a pharmacist about your medicines first.

Does Nervecept contain PEA?
No. The Nervecept label has eight lines, and PEA is not one of them. There is also no B12, B6, B1, alpha-lipoic acid or acetyl-L-carnitine.
Each capsule holds glucosamine sulfate 500 mg, boswellia 67 mg, chondroitin 50 mg, turmeric 50 mg, and quercetin, methionine, MSM and bromelain at 8 mg each. They are mostly joint-style ingredients.

From the Supplement Facts panel on the label: every line has an exact amount, and no line has a Daily Value. The capsule shell (hypromellose) and rice flour are not counted. The glucosamine is made from shellfish (crayfish).
The capsule contains shellfish (crayfish). Per bottle, the sales page asks $79, $69 or $49 by pack size, with a 60-day guarantee (Nervecept sales page). See the ingredients page.
How should you decide about PEA?
Talk to your doctor first, and treat PEA as an extra, not a medicine. Pick a product with a clear label and a stated amount.
Never stop or change a prescribed medicine on account of a supplement. See a doctor soon for new, sudden or one-sided symptoms.
FAQ01
Nervecept questions people ask
What does PEA stand for in supplements?
PEA stands for palmitoylethanolamide. It is a single ingredient, not a vitamin.
How much PEA was used in the trials?
The pooled trials used 300 to 1,200 mg a day. Your product may differ, so read the label and ask a pharmacist.
Is PEA safe to take with nerve medicines?
We found no interaction data in our sources. Ask your pharmacist before you combine PEA with any prescribed nerve or pain medicine.
Is PEA the same as the pea in peas and vegetables?
No. Here PEA is an abbreviation for palmitoylethanolamide, a separate ingredient, and it has nothing to do with the vegetable.
