Neuropathy and Walking: Staying Active With Numb or Tingling Feet

Quick answer

Neuropathy and walking can go together. The American Academy of Neurology lists exercise as an option for painful diabetic neuropathy, and the CDC says to stay active. Protect your feet with shoes and daily checks, and take steps to prevent falls. Nervecept does not treat neuropathy.

Is walking good for neuropathy?

Exercise is a guideline option. The 2022 American Academy of Neurology guideline says clinicians may offer exercise, CBT, tai chi or mindfulness to people with painful diabetic neuropathy who prefer non-drug approaches (AAN, Painful Diabetic Neuropathy 2022).

The CDC also tells people with diabetes to stay active (CDC, Your Feet and Diabetes). Neither source gives a walking plan. Ask your clinician how far, how often and on what surfaces.

How do you protect your feet while walking?

Wear shoes and socks, even indoors, and check your feet every day. These are CDC steps for people with diabetes and nerve damage (CDC, Your Feet and Diabetes).

Numb feet may not feel a blister or cut. A daily look is how you catch one. Wash and dry your feet, and do not cut off corns yourself. Have your feet checked at every visit and get a yearly foot exam.

Early treatment greatly lowers the risk of amputation, so tell your clinician about any sore.

A 24-hour day: one capsule about half an hour before breakfast, a walk after lunch, a foot check in the evening, and 7 to 9 hours of sleep2461218
  1. Morning, about 7:00

One capsule with 8 oz of water, 20-30 minutes before breakfast, as the label suggests. Prescribed medicine stays on its own schedule.

  2. A walk after lunch

Exercise is one of the non-drug options neurology guidelines list for painful diabetic neuropathy.

  3. Evening foot check

Look at both feet every day for cuts, blisters and red spots, and wear shoes and socks, as the CDC advises.

  4. Night, 7 to 9 hours

Nerve symptoms often feel worse at night. Note them in a log to show your doctor.

Exercise from the AAN guideline (AAN, Painful Diabetic Neuropathy 2022); foot care from CDC (CDC, Your Feet and Diabetes); night symptoms from NIDDK (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy). The capsule time is the label suggestion; your doctor can change it.

How can you prevent falls with neuropathy?

Treat balance as part of the problem. The National Cancer Institute lists balance trouble among nerve effects of cancer treatment and advises preventing falls and protecting hands and feet (NCI, Nerve Problems and Cancer Treatment).

NCI wrote this for cancer care, so ask your clinician how it applies to you. Report new balance problems early. Ask your care team about help with balance.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Do not stop a prescribed medicine to start a walking plan or a supplement. If you notice sudden weakness on one side, call 911.

Does Nervecept help with neuropathy and walking?

No study shows it does. Nervecept is a dietary supplement, and its label shows eight lines led by glucosamine sulfate 500 mg. The front claim "Strength in Extremities*" is a structure claim FDA has not evaluated.

Walking, foot care and medical care come first. If you still want to try it, know that it contains shellfish (crayfish). One capsule a day is the label dose. Read each line on the ingredients page and the who it is for page.

FAQ01

Nervecept questions people ask

Can I walk every day with neuropathy?

Often yes, but ask your clinician first. Wear shoes and socks, check your feet after, and tell your clinician about pain or new weakness.

Which exercises does the AAN guideline mention?

It names exercise in general, plus CBT, tai chi and mindfulness, as non-drug options to offer. It gives no set routine.

Why does neuropathy raise the risk of falls?

The sources used here do not give a full reason. NCI lists balance problems and weakness as nerve effects and advises preventing falls.
