Nerve Supplements for Neuropathy: Types, Causes and the Evidence
Nerve supplements for neuropathy have mixed or weak evidence, and the cause of the neuropathy decides what helps. NINDS lists more than 100 types. Nervecept has not been tested for neuropathy, so see a doctor about the cause first and keep taking prescribed medicine.

What types of neuropathy are there?
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord, and NINDS counts more than 100 types. Diabetes is the leading cause, and about two thirds of people with diabetes have some nerve problems (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Diabetic neuropathy itself has four forms: peripheral, autonomic, focal and proximal (NIDDK, Diabetic Neuropathy). Other causes include vitamin B12 deficiency, too much vitamin B6, alcohol, kidney disease, infections and chemotherapy (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness, pain or weakness in the feet, legs, hands or arms, often worse at night (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Why does the cause of neuropathy matter for supplements?
The cause decides the treatment. NINDS says care targets the cause, and its page does not recommend supplements as treatment (NINDS, Peripheral Neuropathy). A supplement that suits one cause may do nothing, or harm, in another.
For painful diabetic neuropathy, the American Academy of Neurology lists four classes of prescription medicine, and says not to use opioids (AAN, Painful Diabetic Neuropathy 2022). It also lists exercise, CBT and tai chi. The American Diabetes Association names pregabalin or duloxetine as first line, and supplements are not among its recommendations (ADA, Diabetic Neuropathy Position 2017).

SoonTingling, burning or numbness in the feet or hands that lasts more than a few weeks, keeps you up at night, or comes with diabetes, heavy drinking or chemotherapy: book a doctor visit and ask about B12 and blood sugar tests.

Which nerve supplements for neuropathy have evidence?
A few have some, and none has strong proof. Alpha-lipoic acid has the most data, mainly by vein. Others rest on small or very-low-certainty studies.
| Supplement | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Alpha-lipoic acid | Intravenous use reduced diabetic symptoms; one 4-year oral trial missed its main goal (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid) |
| Acetyl-L-carnitine | Very low certainty for diabetic pain (Cochrane, Acetyl-L-carnitine 2019) |
| PEA | Small, varied trials in chronic pain (Lang-Illievich et al., PEA 2023) |
| Vitamin B12 | Helps when deficiency is the cause (NIH ODS, Vitamin B12) |
| Vitamin B6 | Excess causes neuropathy (NIH ODS, Vitamin B6) |
For chemotherapy nerve problems, ASCO says acetyl-L-carnitine should be avoided (ASCO Post, CIPN guideline 2020).
Is Nervecept a supplement for neuropathy?
Nervecept is not tested for neuropathy and is not a medicine for it. It is a daily capsule with eight joint-style ingredients, led by glucosamine sulfate at 500 mg, sold with nerve wording.
It lists none of the nutrients in the table: no alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, PEA, B12 or B6. The doses are mostly below amounts used in studies, which were mostly about joints.
It contains shellfish (crayfish), and the label asks people with a medical condition to consult a physician first. Keep taking prescribed medicine and see the ingredients page for each line.
FAQ01
Nervecept questions people ask
How is diabetic neuropathy different from other types?
It comes from long-term high blood glucose and high blood fats, and it has four forms (NIDDK, Diabetic Neuropathy). Other types have other causes, such as B12 deficiency or drugs, so the fix differs.
Does alpha-lipoic acid work for neuropathy?
By vein it reduced diabetic symptoms in meta-analyses. Evidence for pills is weaker, and many studies came from one funded group (Linus Pauling Institute, Lipoic Acid).
Which doctor should I see for neuropathy symptoms?
Start with your primary care provider. Ask about blood tests, including glucose and B12. A foot exam is advised at least yearly if you have diabetes (NIDDK, Peripheral Neuropathy).
Can neuropathy symptoms be a sign of something serious?
Sometimes. Sudden weakness or numbness needs urgent care. Cause matters, so get new or spreading symptoms checked.
